Midges are often called sand flies, however not every sand fly is a midge. Sand fly is a common name for several types of small biting insects. The presence and nuisance of midge has been increasing in recent years. Midge bites can cause severe itching and excessive scratching can result in wounds which can become infected. According to Queensland Health, midges do not transmit disease to humans in Australia.
You can take preventative measures to reduce the impact of midge bites by following the ‘tips to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes’ information and also consider:
- spraying insect screens with a UV resistant insect spray to reduce midges entering through the screens
- Running ceiling and pedestal fans as a deterrent as midges don’t like air currents.
